8 Powerful Bible Verses to Strengthen a Marriage in Jesus’ Name

Last month, we received a call from a woman who was on the verge of giving up on her marriage. She explained that her husband had become distant, and their relationship was crumbling. There were constant quarrels over small matters, and she could feel the love they once shared slipping away. She was afraid. Many would have told her to seek professional help or maybe consider separating, but we knew there was more to her problem than meets the eye, and together we recited powerful Bible verses to strengthen the marriage.

It was clear that her marriage was under spiritual attack. The enemy was working overtime to break the union God had blessed. It wasn’t just a matter of misunderstandings or miscommunication; it was an attempt by forces of darkness to destroy what God had put together.

In such situations, we don’t just fold our hands or shed tears. We fight with the Word of God. We encouraged her to stand firm in faith and declare Bible verses that would break the chains holding her marriage hostage. One of the most powerful verses we used was:

“What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:6)

This scripture became her weapon. Every night, she recited it in faith, believing that God had the final say over her marriage. With prayers, fasting, and these powerful Bible declarations, the chains began to break. Slowly but surely, the Lord restored her husband’s heart, and their love began to blossom again.

Jesus said in Ephesians 6:12 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness. This wasn’t the time for the woman to give up. It was the time to fight with scripture, and because of her faith, God intervened.

If your marriage is shaky, don’t give up. Stand on the promises of God’s Word, and watch Him restore and strengthen your union.

What does the Bible say about strengthening marriage?

The Bible has much to say about strengthening marriages.

Ephesians 5:25 tells us:
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”

If Christ could sacrifice Himself for the church, what more should a husband be willing to do for his wife? A marriage is not built on selfish desires but on love, sacrifice, and respect for one another. That’s how God intended it.

But for marriages to be truly strong, we need to keep God at the center. When a marriage is shaky, it could be because one or both partners have shifted focus away from God. The Bible also tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:12:
“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

Who is the third strand in your marriage? It has to be God.

Do you need an example of a couple in the Bible who faced challenges but overcame by God’s grace?

Look at Abraham and Sarah. Though their marriage went through many difficulties—years of waiting for a child, doubts, and even moments of weakness—God stepped in, and their union remained strong.

It shows that even in the hardest times, faith in God’s promises can restore and strengthen any marriage.

Going forward, let’s use Abraham and Sarah as an example of how God can restore and strengthen marriages through faith and patience.

Bible Verses to Strengthen a Marriage

Your marriage will wax strong as we say these Bible verses. But make sure you are in a quiet place. As we speak, visualize your marriage, your husband, and your children (if any).

1. Ephesians 4:32

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

It is our responsibility to forgive our spouses for their mistakes. As you can see in this verse, we have to be gentle, understanding, empathic and support each other. This is the only way we can grow a bond together.

2. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, and it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

This famous Love Chapter describes the characteristics of true love, which should be the foundation of our marriages. What is Love? Love is patient, kind, and not easily angered. It does not envy, boast, or dishonor others. Instead, love protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres.

3. Colossians 3:14

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

What this powerful verse is saying is that love is a glue that holds all other virtues together. In marriage, it means that love is the foundation that unites us perfectly. When we uphold love, there will be a bond that strengthens our relationship through life together.

4. Matthew 19:4-6

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?”

In this verse, Jesus himself reminded us of God’s design for marriage, as we earlier saw in Genesis 2:24. The idea is that marriage is a union between two people, where they become one flesh.

This unity is beyond physical! It is emotional, spiritual, and intellectual. Therefore, the only way we can create a strong bond that honors God’s intention is to put LOVE first.

5. 1 Peter 4:8

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.

Let’s explain with an example. Let’s say we have Sarah and Mike who have been married for 10 years. One day, Mike forgets their anniversary, and Sarah feels disappointed.

Instead of nagging, Sarah chooses to love and forgive Mike. This is how love can strengthen a marriage. So, Sarah has chosen to remind herself of Mike’s good qualities and how he has loved her in the past.

6. Ephesians 5:25-33

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

Paul the Apostle also had something to say concerning marriage. Notice how he likens Love to the Love that Christ had for the church, and giving himself up for it to be holy. Suppose Tom and Rachel have been married for 5 years. Tom notices that Rachel has been struggling with insecurity. Instead of ignoring her, He chooses to love her just like Christ loved the church. He takes the time to listen and encourage her. He also supports her in her goals and dreams, making Rachel become a more confident person. As a result, this marriage is strengthened!

7. Proverbs 10:12

Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.

This verse is self-explanatory. It puts hatred and love. Hatred stirs up conflict and creates division in a marriage, but love covers over mistakes and promotes peace, thereby making the marriage wax strong.

8. Genesis 2:24

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

We introduced this recitation with this Bible verse, and we are reintroducing it as the last. This is to remind you that marriage makes a husband and wife become ONE flesh. This unity is both physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual.

You will have your own share of conflicts and disagreements, but what is important is that you choose love over hatred. For example, when a husband forgets to help with household chores, you lovingly remind him instead of criticizing him. When a wife struggles with anxiety, the husband listens and supports her instead of dismissing her feelings.

How to keep marriage strong by Bible in the Name of Jesus

What do you need to do to make sure that you declare these Bible verses, and heaven respects your voice.

Have Faith

The first thing is faith. In the Bible, we see the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho. God gave Joshua instructions that seemed unusual—march around the city for seven days, and on the seventh day, shout. There was no logical reason for walls to come down by shouting, but Joshua had faith in God’s Word. In Joshua 6:16, Joshua told the people, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!” His faith in God’s power helped them win the battle. In the same way, you need faith in God to keep your marriage strong. Trust in His Word and believe that no matter what comes your way, God will give you victory over every challenge.

Prayer

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools to keep a marriage strong. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 18:19, “If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” Prayer brings God into the center of your relationship, and when you pray together as a couple, you invite God’s peace, wisdom, and protection over your home. When you feel weak, ask God for strength. When you feel lost, ask for direction. Prayer is the anchor that keeps your marriage grounded in Christ, and it reminds you that you are not alone in this journey.

Love

In the Bible, love is the foundation of marriage. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us that love is patient, kind, not self-seeking, and always protects. But it also says that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Marriage will not always be easy, but love is what keeps you going when times get tough. Look at Ruth and Boaz—Ruth’s loyalty and love to her family, despite her hardships, led her to Boaz, and through their union, God’s purpose was fulfilled. Love, rooted in Christ, is more than just a feeling; it is a commitment to walk together through every season, trusting that God’s love will guide you both.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is key to a strong marriage. In Colossians 3:13, we are reminded to “bear with each other and forgive one another… Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Holding onto grudges or past hurts will only weaken your relationship. But when you forgive, you open the door for healing and restoration in your marriage. Through forgiveness, God allows both partners to grow in grace and love.

Go and be blessed for the Lord has answered your declarations, and these Bible verses have strengthened your marriage right now! God wants our marriages to be strengthened on Love because it is His original intention for couples.
